Filling 'er up (not filling, per se, but trying to use some of the glorious tank). Changing the oil I exchanged for synthetic because of second thoughts. Almost running over a neighbor who worked at the Corvette cooling system plant because ridiculous clutch travel+slippery socks+shitty rear brakes. Dat glass and UFO sex. Long lost treasures found in the car. All of this and more on today's installment of... C4 Update.

Kinja'd!!!

Let's start with some security photos of the culprit of today's almost-disaster. It was definitely not me. All Doug Nash's fault. Come on, Doug! I didn't even look like an idiot at all because it was definitely not my idiocy.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

That little bastard on the left...

(A picture from a camera of a car.)

Anyways, onto the glass. I made a very special video for you guys using duct tape. The initial "pop" is far more dramatic in person. The sound is called UFO sex.

I figure that's more useful right now than a full video review. UFO sex is all you really need or want to know about the C4 Corvette. The duct tape is there for phone mound construction. On to the gas and oil change...

I put gasoline in the car. It was 87 octane. You might be wondering why that matters. It doesn't. But screw you and your curiosity. I drove to the gas station illegally, making me a certifiable badass. Also, I changed the oil. I exchanged the Castrol GTX for Edge. I avoided the evil laugh guy. Also, now I know why they call it "Edge." It's called Edge because some marketing guy found that the word evoked thoughts of lubrication from the L98. My engine talks to me. TPI stands for Translation Por Ingles. All 350 small block engines spoke Spanish before the L98 translator, which explains why I can really understand what my motor's telling me.

Kinja'd!!!

(THE AFTERMATH OF UFO SEX)

Wow, I just went off on a weird tangent. Let's talk about exhaust tips. Actually, let's look at half of mine.

Kinja'd!!!

Onto the long lost treasure found hidden in the car. It's a penny. From 1998. Many say Lincoln had a bronzed complexion, but this historical artifact suggests copper is the closer metal to Abe's pigmentation. This is indeed quite a historically significant discovery.

Kinja'd!!!

I think that's about it. The car would probably benefit a lot from a proper seafaming. This was a very weird post. Have a photo.

My friend has a 91 ZR-1 that he refuses to drive when the top is off. He says the flex is too damn scary.

I'm loving the car!

Beware of the doors unlocking themselves while driving topless. It's scary as shit.

He's right for sure. They didn't engineer it with roofless driving in mind. However, the floppiness is easily remedied by a targa brace or underbody X-brace from the convertibles. I would love to own a ZR1 someday...

I don't think he'll do that to his ZR-1, I think he and his dad mainly have it as a collectors car, it has traveled less than 20,000 miles. But it is a pretty sweet car. That motor is amazing but from what he's told me is that if you plan on driving it you need to know a good ZR-1 mechanic because those motors aren't the easiest to work on.

As a 3-time loser myself (presently own a 2001, my third Vette), I have some honest, heart-felt advice for you, not meant to be snarky or sarcastic I swear.

If you have to ask a counterman what oil to use, then you are not suitably prepared for the C4 experience. You are almost certain become a lifelong Corvette-GM hater. Only a "Jedi knight" of car maintenance should consider taking on even the most minor task on a C4.

good luck!

Haha I honestly thought the same thing as I stood there like an idiot. But I've had the car for very little time at all, and I had 5W-30 handy in case there was a problem. I had to get to the store as fast as possible, and the car isn't being driven, so I had no reason/way of looking that up before heading out. /end excuse list

I think I'm ready to take on the car. In retrospect, this will most likely be a bad decision. But I really hadn't driven the car other than on the day of purchase and was too busy with other shit to make sure it was 5W-30. There's plenty of shitty advice you hear from corvette discussion online. Thanks for the advice.

What about sith-lords? Should they just stick to Audis?

I don't know... I like the 4+3, and I won't be able to afford a ZF swap for a good, long while. The 4+3 is rebuilt, so I probably have plenty of good years ahead of me.

4+3=7, he's way ahead of you. I mean, technically speaking...

Targa brace is a targa top made out of steel tubes. It goes on and comes off the same way. There is no modification necessary to the car.

I want one, because they are totally worth it.

Keep the 4+3, it gives the car character AND it's rather uncommon. If you want a six speed, sell it and get an '89+.

This is true. The 4+3 really adds character and also makes the driving experience more interesting. I don't plan on regularly doing really spirited driving or adding a ton of miles, and they last if you remember the ATF for the OD unit .

Kinja'd!!! Axial > JayZAyEighty thinks C4+3=C7

Just turn the OD off every time you start the car, and clutch in every time you cycle it on/off while driving. Since it's only good for cruising anyway, it only needs to be active on long stretches of sameness.

As for the ATF, change every 10,0000 miles. Also seals. Then you're good.

I enjoy the 4+3. I really don't see where all the hate comes from.

Good to know. I have an idea where it comes from, though: people who don't clutch in when engaging/disengaging OD, people who don't realize there's basically an automatic gearbox on their car, and people who expect miata-like clutch and shifting. People who hate on the C4 will naturally hate on the 4+3, because it's a combination of new (in '84) and old technology which is always a marriage few can appreciate. I usually haven't used OD other than on the highway, and dealing with what is basically a Super T10 is great.

Funny thing is, my 87 hasn't had the hard top on in so long, I was too young to remember. Is it that much stiffer with the top on?

I only got to ride with the top on, so I have no idea what it is like with out the top, but the c4's really aren't that rigid as it is. But then again his DD is a 2.5 RS with all the bracing and stiff suspension so pretty much anything is going to be flimsy compared to that.
